Do you prick eggs before you cook them?

Read here why this is unnecessary and what really helps against cracking breakfast eggs.

For many, a cozy Sunday breakfast also includes a boiled egg.

Before the eggs go into the water to be soft or hard-boiled *, depending on your preferences, many people resort to a tip from grandmother's time:

prick

the

shell with an egg prick or a pin

.

This is supposed to keep the eggs from popping open while cooking.

But is that really true?

Piercing eggs: why you can save yourself the trouble of piercing eggs

The theory is that when the egg is heated, the air in the small air bubble at the thicker end of the egg can expand and burst the shell.

By

piercing the shell

is to be prevented.

To do this, it is important to actually take the shell at the thicker end and not poke the wrong side.

Sometimes eggs don't have a unique shape.

In these cases, you can simply use the following trick: put the egg in water.

The side that floats further up is the one with the air bubble that you should puncture.

Now to the question of whether piercing does anything at all.

In a test by the WDR, 3,000 eggs were boiled, half with a hole in the shell, the other half without piercing.

Lo and behold: around every tenth

egg burst

- regardless of whether it was pierced or not.

Piercing is therefore no guarantee that the eggs will not burst open when they are cooked.

However, everyone has had their own experience of boiling eggs.

If you think

pricking will help keep

the

popped open

, keep doing it.

Or try one of the following tips.

Tips against cracking eggs: You can do this in addition to piercing

  • Before cooking, take the eggs out of the refrigerator in good time so that they are at room temperature.

Because one reason for the cracking open when cooking is the temperature difference between the egg from the refrigerator and boiling water.

  • Gently place the eggs in the hot water with a tablespoon.

Even the smallest hairline crack can cause the eggs to burst.

  • Don't worry if eggs do pop open.

    You can still enjoy them.

Extra tip: If you add a little vinegar to the cooking water, the emerging egg white coagulates faster and closes the hole in the egg.

So the breakfast egg is still presentable and can be served.

With these tips, nothing should stand in the way of a delicious breakfast egg.
