After the federal-state consultations on steps in the fight against the Corona variant Omikron, the chairman of the education union VBE, Udo Beckmann, called for more clarity for school operations.

"I expect that politics in the school sector will not proceed as before according to the motto that everything will somehow work out fine," said Beckmann.

The trade unionist demanded that those politically responsible must obtain a concrete assessment of the government's Corona Expert Council, "how the school area should deal with the new situation from a virological point of view and which infection protection measures are absolutely necessary".

In the decision of the Prime Minister's Conference (MPK) from Tuesday evening, the schools are not discussed in more detail.

Most federal states already have school holidays until the next MPK, currently planned for January 7th.

For Thuringia, where lessons would normally have started again on January 3rd, Education Minister Helmut Holter (Linke) has already extended the winter holidays by two days.

Shortly before the deliberations of the country chiefs, the Robert Koch Institute recommended extending the Christmas break.

Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger wants to "avoid closings at all".

The FDP politician had said: "As long as we can still go to the football stadium, no school is allowed to close."
