The Robert Koch Institute as the leading biomedical research facility of the German federal government provides information on the current corona development in a fact sheet.

Corona vaccination is currently the dominant topic.

Not just in Germany, but worldwide.

It is currently the most important measure to contain the corona pandemic.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), it

would be desirable from a public health point of view to achieve the highest possible vaccination rate of at least 85 percent

.

In Germany, 69.8 percent of the total population had been fully vaccinated against Corona by December 15, 2021.

What speaks for the vaccination: You not only protect yourself from severe courses, but also those who cannot be vaccinated

because of previous illnesses or because no vaccine is recommended for them (children from zero to five years).

According to the RKI, the corona vaccination protects against ...

  • ... frequent corona symptoms: fever, headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, diarrhea, loss of the sense of smell and taste and a sore throat.

  • ... complications of Covid-19 such as pneumonia, shortness of breath up to the need for artificial respiration, neurological and cardiovascular damage, excessive immune reaction, long-Covid up to death.

Severe corona courses: Particularly endangered groups of people

The older a person is and the more serious the previous illness / s, the higher the risk of a severe corona course.

The RKI has broken down

which groups of people most often die in connection with a coronavirus infection.

The following figures show the number of deaths per 100 Covid cases.

  • People aged 80+:

17.93 deceased per 100 corona cases (with previous illness), 1.49 deceased without previous illness

  • People between 70 and 79 years

: 8.74 deaths with previous illnesses, 0.66 without previous illnesses

  • People between 60 and 69 years

: 2.64 dead with previous illness, 0.25 without previous illness

In older people with previous illnesses, it is not possible to clearly distinguish whether age or previous illness increases mortality, according to additional information from the RKI.

A vaccination protects against serious and fatal courses of the disease.

According to the RKI, the vaccines from Moderna (Spikevax), Biontech (Comirnaty) and Astrazeneca (Vaxzevria) offer

around 90 percent effectiveness against severe corona courses that require treatment in the clinic.

In the case of Johnson & Johnson products, the figure is around 70 percent.
