ROME - The percentage of pediatric hospitalizations for Covid doubles and rises to 96%.
They are all unvaccinated children and half of the young patients have unvaccinated parents.
This is what emerges from the report of the sentinel hospitals of Fiaso.
The survey carried out on 21 December concerns a total of 21 hospital health structures and 4 pediatric hospitals.
According to the document, in the ordinary wards unvaccinated patients amounted to 53% but in the last week there was an increase of 16.7% in no vaxes against a 2% reduction in vaccinated out of a total of 1,301 adult patients. The 7% growth trend in hospitalizations is therefore confirmed. There is a clear difference in age between vaccinated and non vaccinated: the former are on average 73 years old, the latter 63 years old or 10 years younger. Comorbidities among the vaccinated were also higher (73%), while among the unvaccinated, 50% of the hospitalized did not suffer from other diseases.
"The highest number of new hospitalizations since the beginning of the pandemic was recorded at the Giannina Gaslini Institute in the week of 14-21 December", says General Manager Renato Botti. "Our data also confirm what emerges from sentinel hospitals regarding the prevalence of hospitalization cases in the 0-4 age group, and the high percentage of unvaccinated parents. Analyzing in more detail the data by age group in the Ligurian territory and comparing them with the incidence of all the new positivity found - continues Botti - it emerges that the incidence of new cases in the 0-4 age group in recent weeks has now exceeded that of the general population as a whole, unlike what previously found in the first three waves,who saw small and very small children 'spared' in good measure from the infection. In the population aged 5-18, the incidence of new positivity is more than double compared to the general population ".
“We are facing two epidemics: one that runs and concerns the no vaxes who end up in resuscitation and develop severe forms of Covid disease; a slower one that involves the vaccinated, mostly people of advanced age and with serious previous diseases, and who have not yet taken the third dose - comments the President Fiaso Giovanni Migliore - This highlights even more the importance of vaccination in protection from the disease and in particular the anticipation of the third dose for the frail. The sentinel hospitals report highlights how even minors can be affected by the virus and end up in hospital: for those over 5 years old it is necessary to get vaccinated, for children up to 4 years old, however, the only protection we can offer is that of those around them and in particular of their parents.Getting vaccinated means protecting oneself and protecting others ”.
