A little over a month since it came into our lives, scientists are still studying the true risks of the omicron version of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes corona.

The latest report from the response team to COVID-19 from the Imperial College London indicates that the risk of re-infection from the new version is 5.4 times higher than with the Delta strain.

A previous study estimated that previous infection provided 85 percent protection against a second Delta infection for 6 months.

In the current report, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, the value for Omicron is only 19 percent.

"This study provides further evidence of the very significant learning in which omicron can evade previous immunity achieved by infection or vaccination. This level of immunosuppression means that omicron poses a crucial and immediate threat to public health," said Professor Neil Ferguson of Imperial College London in a statement.

The team also examined the risk of infection from a version of Omicron in people with two doses of the vaccine and in those who received the booster.

The data were collected by the UK Health Security Agency and the UK Health Service between 29 November and 11 December.

In people who have received the standard vaccine, the effectiveness against symptomatic corona appears to be at most 20 percent.

After the booster, the efficiency stands at 55 to 80 percent.

"The quantification of the risk of re-infection and the effectiveness of the Omicron vaccine are essential to the predictive model of the likely future trajectory of the current wave and the potential impact of vaccination and other public health interventions," explained Prof. Ezra Gani of Imperial College London. The study also indicates that there is no major difference in the severity of the disease between the omicron and the delta, but the team stressed that the data remained limited, especially when it came to hospitalization.

"The message from this study is clear - do not think that if you have been infected with corona in the past, you can not get it again. According to the current report and previous studies, the variant seems to be able to evade more easily than any previous immunity," the researchers said.

"The vaccine provides a safe and effective way to increase COVID-19 levels of immunity, especially to the Omicron version, without getting the disease. It's important to get the booster shot, especially now,"This study shows that three doses provide much better protection against the variant than just two doses of vaccine."
