After a landslide in a jade mine, the authorities in Myanmar assume numerous victims.

"About 70 to 100 people are missing after a landslide that occurred around four in the morning in the Hpakant mine in the state of Kachin," said a rescue worker from the AFP news agency on Wednesday.

Accordingly, the emergency services brought 25 injured people to the hospital and found one dead.

Mining debris fell into a lake and triggered the landslide, said Dashi Naw Lawn of the Kachin Network Development Foundation, which helped with the rescue work.

Around 200 emergency services were looking for more victims.

Some were in boats on the lake.

Fatal accidents over and over again

Every year dozens of people die working in Myanmar's extremely lucrative but poorly regulated jade industry.

Last year, a massive landslide spilled almost 300 miners in Hpakant - the center of Myanmar's jade trade.

In 2015, 116 people died in a similar accident.

The impoverished crisis country Myanmar is one of the world's largest suppliers of green gemstones, which are particularly popular in China.

Most of them come from the region of the accident in the north of the country.

The industry is hardly regulated.

Fatal accidents happen again and again because the workers toil under sometimes life-threatening conditions.
