Here's food for thought the next time you try to make a baby funny and it does not impress: a new study has found that babies do not develop a sense of humor until they are about a month old.

According to a global study of about 700 children, published in the journal Behavior Research Methods, the earliest time infants can appreciate humor is in dhk four weeks, while about half of newborns start finding funny things only at two months of age.

The study, conducted by a team from the University of Bristol, found that infants can appreciate different forms of physical, visual and auditory humor through play, with activities such as peeking ("ponytail"), tickling, using objects, making funny faces and speaking in strange voices.

The study also found that infants under one year of age enjoyed noticing other people’s reaction, like seeing someone who felt fear.

The researchers also looked at what's funny about two- and three-year-olds, and saw that the first category was of "nonsense humor," for example phrases like "How does a dog do? Mo."

It was also found that three-year-olds enjoyed word games, tricks and, yes, even rude words.

The researchers recognized that socialization is the key to children developing a sense of humor, and they noted that it can also help improve their other cognitive skills, such as imagination.

Dr. Elena Hoika, the lead researcher, said that "our results emphasize that humor is a complex process that develops in the first four years of life."

"Given the universality and importance of so many aspects of children's and adults' lives, it's important to develop tools to determine how humor first develops so we can better understand not only the appearance of humor itself, but how humor may help children cognitively, socially and mentally healthy." .

She added that "the early humor survey addresses an important gap when different types of humor develop. It has the potential, with more research, to serve as a diagnostic tool in early development in terms of developmental differences, and help inform early childhood educators and adjust curriculum at 0-5 years.
