Avian flu: in France, sixteen farms affected by the virus

2021-12-23T12:25:23.322Z

Eight outbreaks are located in the north and eight in the southwest (five in the Gers, two in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and one in the Landes).

We must "protect massively", pleaded the Minister of Agriculture.

According to Julien Denormandie, this Thursday on RMC, sixteen farms are now affected by the avian flu virus in France.

In detail, eight homes are located in the North and eight in the South-West (five in the Gers, two in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and one in the Landes), the ministry told AFP.

The last identified case is located in the Gers, in a farm located within a radius of three kilometers of the first outbreak detected in the South-West on December 16 in the town of Manciet.

In accordance with the protocol in place, the palmipeds from the latter farm, considered to be "epidemiologically linked" with the first, were slaughtered preventively.

"The positive test results arrived after the depopulation of this home," the ministry was told.

"Consumption presents no risk"

We must "protect massively", pleaded the minister, not to repeat the scenario of last winter, when the virus had affected 15 departments and led to the slaughter of 3.5 million farm poultry.

"As soon as a farm is contaminated by this virus, to avoid any risk and to prevent this same farm from contaminating those next door, we order the slaughter of either palmipeds or poultry, which are there" , explained Julien Denormandie.

But "the consumption of foie gras, duck or eggs presents no risk".

Brought by migratory birds that come into contact with poultry, the virus was first identified on November 26 in the North, in the town of Warhem where 160,000 laying hens were reared in buildings.

From the beginning of November, the health authorities had asked all producers in mainland France to confine their poultry in order to avoid contact with migratory birds potentially carrying the virus.

France has around 20,000 poultry farms raised for meat, eggs or foie gras, of which the South-West is the main production sector.
