Corona vaccination: New EU regulation - when the vaccination status expires

The European Union is shortening the validity of the corona vaccination certificates.

We have summarized the most important information.

Kassel - From February 1st, the European Union will shorten the validity of all Corona * vaccination certificates.

Anyone who has not received a booster vaccination * could then be considered unvaccinated.

According to initial information, the vaccination certificates should expire nine months (or 270 days) after the second vaccination.

This was announced by the EU Commission.

While Member States could still vote against the decision, it is unlikely.

Various EU countries already have their own vaccination rules and expiration dates for the vaccination status.

Corona vaccination certificate no longer valid: There will soon be a uniform EU regulation

Since the regulations vary from country to country, a uniform regulation for Europe is necessary according to Focus-Online.

For example, in Austria vaccination certificates are invalid after nine months, in Croatia even after seven months.

So far, the certificate is valid for twelve months in Germany.

After that one is considered unvaccinated.

The corona vaccination certificate will soon only be valid for nine months across Europe.

Without a booster vaccination, the vaccination status changes.

But why do the vaccination certificates become invalid at all?

After a while, the vaccines will wear off.

The point in time until when a vaccination is still effective varies depending on the vaccine and variant.

Opinions differ as to when exactly the effect of the vaccination wears off.

How long are the corona vaccines effective?

Some studies are no longer up-to-date

For example, researchers at the Swedish university have found that Astrazeneca was no longer vaccinated after just four months.

In Germany, Astrazeneca vaccinated people were therefore called upon to apply for a booster vaccination as soon as possible.

Moderna and Biontech / Pfizer also followed up on people from the registration studies.

Both companies report that their vaccines are still over 90 percent effective six months after the second vaccination.

However, the data come from the spring, when the delta variant was not yet the predominant one.

At this point in time, the Omikron variant * was also not yet widespread.

Corona vaccination wears off after five months: change in vaccination status?

In the meantime, the Prime Ministers decided at the last Prime Minister's Conference at the beginning of December: "Because the protection of the corona vaccination against the currently prevailing virus variants in the currently available vaccines decreases continuously from about the fifth month, the vaccination status will have to be changed if there is no booster vaccination."

So if you want to maintain your vaccination protection and want to be considered vaccinated before the law, you should register for a booster vaccination as soon as possible.

After all, it is to be expected that the new EU rules will also apply in Germany from February.

In the fight against the more contagious Omikron variant, the federal government has already adopted stricter rules for New Year's Eve *.
