Covid-19: 91,600 new cases in 24 hours, a record since the start of the pandemic

2021-12-23T18:31:23.479Z

The previous record of contaminations per day went back to April, but was the result of catching up. Thanks to vaccination, the situation

This is a new record which, on the eve of the Christmas holidays and family reunion, worries.

91,608 new cases have been identified in the past 24 hours.

Earlier, the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, had mentioned the number of 88,000 contaminations.

"These are the worst figures since the start of the pandemic," the minister warned.

The previous record - 84,999 cases over the same period - dated back to April 8, but it was the result of a catching up caused by the presence of public holidays.

"We will very likely exceed 100,000 contaminations per day by the end of the month", had already warned Olivier Véran, on BFM TV. This resurgence of the epidemic, reaching unprecedented levels, is due to the Delta variant, but also to the very rapid spread of the Omicron variant, discovered only a few weeks ago in South Africa. This explosion in the number of cases is also explained by the number of tests, which are higher as the holidays approach. Faced with an explosion of contaminations, several European countries have announced a tightening of restrictive measures.

This fifth wave puts pressure on the hospital, although at lower levels compared to the previous ones, in particular thanks to the vaccination which reduces the risks of hospitalizations.

16,060 patients are currently in hospital due to a Covid-19 infection, compared to 16,118 on Wednesday and 15,142 last Thursday.

1,347 new admissions have been recorded in the past 24 hours, compared to 1,404 the day before and 1,342 seven days ago.

179 new deaths in 24 hours

At the hospital, 3,208 patients are currently in critical care units (resuscitation, continuous monitoring and intensive care).

There were 3,147 on Wednesday and 2,832 last Thursday.

Last Wednesday, the government spokesperson, Gabriel Attal, spoke of a number of patients in critical care which "should exceed 3000 very quickly and reach 4000 around the holidays".

323 new admissions have been recorded in these services in the last 24 hours, against 322 the day before and 248 seven days ago.

179 new deaths in hospital are to be deplored in the past 24 hours due to a Covid-19 infection.

There were 170 on Wednesday over the same period and 166 seven days ago.

Since the start of the pandemic, the hospital has recorded 95,262 deaths.

Since the start of the vaccination campaign in France, 52,686,872 people have received at least one injection (i.e. 78.1% of the total population1) and 51,585,838 people now have a complete vaccination schedule (i.e. 76.5% of the total population), reports this Thursday the Directorate General of Health.

Since the start of the booster campaign, 21,742,825 people have received a booster dose.
