On the occasion of Hebrew Day today (Thursday), the Academy of the Hebrew Language invited the public to choose the word of the year for the second year.
Nine words were put to the vote, and they were chosen from hundreds of proposals that came from the public.
Many thousands responded to the request and participated during the Hebrew Week in voting on the Hebrew Language Academy website.
Throughout the voting days, the word "troll" led by a considerable margin from the other words, and is the word chosen for the word of the year.
The three words that competed for the following places represent the corona plague that has accompanied us for two years: "vaccine" that won second place, "mash" that came in third place, and "boost" (booster) that came in fourth place.
The other words to be chosen also reflected the past year: "climate" - in light of the climate crisis that has entered the public consciousness;
"Change" - a word that connects to the political year we experienced;
"Routine" - in light of the attempt to return to routine in the shadow of the corona plague;
"Traffic jams" - which make our lives more and more bitter;
Last but not least - a "gold medal", which reminds us of the fine achievements of the Israeli delegation at the last Olympics.
Where does the word "troll" come from?
In the old-fashioned slang, the word trollla (and also trollallah) is used to refer to a person who is distracted or to a person whose mind is wrong (the nickname sometimes comes with a rotational movement of the finger against the temple).
From this nickname were derived about four decades ago the adjective from troll and verb to troll in the sense of madness, harassment and harassment.
Hence the name of the action Troll.
Interestingly, the word "trill" was also established as a standard term in the "Dictionary of Music Terms" published by the academy in 1955. This troll is related to the Italian word trillio which means curl of the voice, change of tone (in rapid repetition).
The Academy of the Hebrew Language notes that the word "troll" has also taken its place in the general spoken language.
The word troll is similar to other words in which a root is derived from a sound word (onomatopoeia) borrowed from the foreign language and entered into a Hebrew format, such as click and click from the word 'click'.
