Why it can still be worthwhile to bring some issues forward

At the turn of the year it can be worthwhile for many taxpayers if they bring the costs that are already required into the current year.

Tax experts explain why.

Anyone who has to

expect

a significantly lower

income

in the coming year

than before - for example due to

parental leave

*

or because you will

retire

in 2022

- you should also

keep an eye

on the

tax

at

the end of the year

.

Because in such cases it can often be worthwhile to

bring tax-reducing expenses forward

to 2021, as the Association of Taxpayers of the German Press Agency (dpa) advises.

Because if only little or no

income tax is

due in

2022

, the expenses could then possibly no longer be used to reduce

taxes

, as the dpa report continues.

Costs that are already required could therefore be brought forward accordingly and included in the 2021 tax return - in order to reduce the tax burden.

But depending on your life situation, it can also be worthwhile to bring forward costs for the

craftsman,

advertising expenses

or expenses for

office equipment

to the current year.

In the meantime, it sometimes makes sense for taxpayers to consciously push tax-reducing expenses into the coming year, for example because they can

bundle

illness-related costs

. The wage tax aid (Lohi) Bayern explained it with an example: "Anyone planning a health resort or hospital stay or an outpatient laser eye surgery for the year 2022, for example, should postpone other health costs into the new year", says it in the message of Lohi. Because the exceeding of the individual reasonableness

limit

for the

extraordinary loads

is necessary "so that a tax advantage arises".

If the self-borne costs were to be spread over several years in the meantime, “you would usually deprive yourself of the pleasure of lowering income tax due to the extraordinary burdens,” the experts point out.

You can read more tips on when taxpayers should better invest or postpone them to the coming year here.

The taxpayers' association has a basic tip: "If

receipts are

sorted before the turn of the year and a

checkout is

made, it is easier to decide, for example, whether new glasses should be bought this year or whether expenses should be postponed," it says on its website.

As a result of the

corona pandemic

, there were also special regulations and funding programs that will expire "promptly", according to a further note from the taxpayers' association. For example, the “

Corona Bonus

”, with which

employees

can receive

up to 1,500 euros tax-free

. As of April 2022, taxes will be due again for such premiums, as the experts inform on their homepage. There it goes on to say: "If an extra bonus is planned for employees in the company, it should be paid out by March 2022 if possible so that the bonus remains tax and social security-free." At the turn of the year, as the taxpayers' association also announces, “important adjustments are again mandatory”.

The

minimum wage will rise

again

from January 2022

- "here employment contracts have to be adjusted".

Since the minimum wage also applies to

mini-jobs

, attention must be paid to adjusting the working hours.

“Otherwise there is a risk of exceeding the 450 euro limit.”
