On Christmas Eve in Japan, customers of the McDonald's fast food chain will have to settle for small portions of fries. The famous American brand has decided to ration one of its flagship products due to logistical problems at its main potato exporter, Canada. The country was seriously affected at the end of November by terrible floods and also has to deal with the Covid pandemic. Suddenly, to avoid a shortage, fans of “McDonald's” fries will have to make a belt, at least until the end of the year. “Given the reasons, there is not much we can do, that's how it is. It has become normal for me to always take a large fries, but hey, the circumstances are what they are, so there is nothing we can do about it ”, testifies Satomi, a bit disappointed,in front of the sign in the streets of Tokyo.
The company specifies that it has taken this measure to allow all consumers to order French fries, despite "the difficulty of maintaining a stable supply of basic ingredients".
This is not the first time that Japanese McDonald's restaurants have been forced to cut down on their portions.
In 2014, an industrial dispute between dockers and American shipping companies also caused a shortage of French fries.
In response, Japanese fast food restaurants had to import more than 1,000 tonnes of potatoes by plane.
