Fruit juices are very popular in Germany, but don't fall for the manufacturers' tricks!

Often what you believe isn't there at all.

Munich - An orange or a multivitamin juice is part of a balanced breakfast in many people in this country.

Supermarkets and discounters, such as Aldi, Rewe or Lidl, usually have a huge selection of juices to offer.

No wonder, because the German consumes an average of 31.5 liters per year (2018), according to the Association of the German Fruit Juice Industry eV (VdF).

The most popular is orange juice with 7.4 liters per year per capita.

But caution is advised.

Especially when buying juice mixes made from several fruits.

Because consumers often only orient themselves by the pictures on the packaging, which lead one to believe what should be inside.

In fact, the juices often only consist of a small proportion of the fruit shown.

The largest part is made up of water and apple juice.

Only one percent mango in "mango-orange-pineapple" juice - consumer advocate thinks that is "brazen"

In the NDR program “My Afternoon”, a contribution dealt with the topic.

The team examined several fruit juices.

The “Mango-Orange-Pineapple” juice from the Valensina brand, for example, contains only one percent mango pulp, 15 percent pineapple juice and 42 percent orange juice made from orange juice concentrate.

The rest consists of 5 percent banana market and 37 percent apple juice.

The fact that bananas and apples are also included is only listed very small in the corner of the front.

Hardly noticeable at first glance.

Valensina explains that the addition is shown smaller, but "clearly noticeable".

Britta Gerckens from the Hamburg Consumption Center thinks it is "really bold" that it only contains 1 percent mango, as she said to the NDR.

Fruit juices: Beware of the 1 percent trick - list of ingredients should be checked

Passers-by were also interviewed in the NDR broadcast.

Most were in good faith and estimate the proportions of the various fruit juices in the mixes far too high.

Customers should therefore look carefully at the list of ingredients in the juices before buying anything.

Otherwise you only have a mixture that is mainly filled with apple juice.

And if it only contains one percent of a certain fruit, it can be doubted whether you can even taste it.

It wasn't until this fall

between a juice manufacturer and the supermarket giant Edeka Knatsch.

The fronts hardened.

Customers suffered as well.
