Of magnitude slightly greater than 4, it occurred a little before one in the morning in the Montbéliard region.

Christmas night was a little more hectic than expected in the east of the country.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred a little before 1 hour, at 12:59 am precisely, according to Renass, the National Seismic Monitoring Network.

The depth of this tremor was 13 km, which is quite shallow.

If the epicenter was in Switzerland, close to the border with France, towards Damvant, the vibrations were particularly felt in the regions of Montbéliard (Doubs) and Belfort (Territoire de Belfort).

Three aftershocks greater than magnitude 2 occurred within half an hour of the event.

Vosges Morning reports that the tremor was also felt in the Vosges department, towards Remiremont in particular.

"Like the sound of a jackhammer"

Asked by France Bleu, an inhabitant of Valentigney, on the outskirts of Montbéliard, described “a rather heavy roar with the walls, like a big disco music that made everything tremble (…) It was all quite surprising.

It really worried me at the time because we didn't expect it ”.

Another witness from the neighboring town of Exincourt evokes about twenty seconds of tremors.

“It was impressive, like the sound of a jackhammer.

No damage has been reported so far.
