The wave of violence against nurses in psychiatric hospitals is intensifying, and the chairman of the Brothers and Nurses Association today (Saturday) issued guidelines to protect the lives of staff and reduce violence against them.
At the same time, a letter was sent to Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz regarding the new guidelines.
"This is an emergency situation that requires immediate solutions and in the absence of such on the part of the state that brothers and sisters are its emissaries entrusted with providing care to Israeli citizens, so we are forced to do it ourselves," the chairman said in a letter. Here are the new guidelines passed on to the brothers and sisters:
In case of physical danger or threats against the brothers and sisters staff, the brothers and sisters team will be evacuated to a protected and closed space (such as a clinic or nursing station) until security guards arrive or the danger passes.
In case of violence between patients, the team of brothers and sisters will call the security guards, who will handle the incident until the violence ceases, including performing everything necessary in everything that involves restrictions.
In all matters relating to restrictions, the team of brothers and sisters will assist in calming the patient in discourse and will not use force.
In the case of involuntary hospitalization in which the patient refuses to receive treatment, no force will be used for the purpose of forcing treatment by the team of brothers and sisters and the issue will be reported to a medical team.
The Brothers and Nurses team will not perform a search on a patient's body and / or a patient's belongings and / or any other search (whether on a patient or another factor) The Nurses Brothers team will report to the competent bodies.
The Brothers and Nurses staff will not accompany patients outside the ward, will not be present in the smoking yard, and the Brothers and Nurses staff will not "secure" staffs or other entities coming into contact with patients - such as families, paramedics, physicians, and volunteers, except when the Nurses staff is present And the nurses are required in the therapeutic aspect, and only after receiving a written and reasoned instruction from the ward physician regarding the clinical need for the presence of the nurses' staff in these sessions.
