When the heel hurts, most people think of heel spur.

However, completely different diseases can also be behind the problems.

Gundelfingen - They often appear in the morning after getting up or during the day after sitting for a long time: attacks of pain in the heel.

There can be various triggers behind this.

One possible cause is heel spur.

"These are thorn-shaped protrusions in the area of the heel," says alternative practitioner René Gräber from Preetz.

They can trigger painful inflammation in the surrounding tissue - caused, for example, by incorrect footwear or being overweight.

There are also other diseases that are associated with heel pain, but are incorrectly known as heel spurs, as orthopedist and foot surgeon Thomas Schneider from the Gundelfingen joint clinic says.

Achilles tendinitis, for example.

In that case there is a spur at the tendon insertion with radiating pain into the heels.

We need our heels with every step we take.

"A flat arched foot is also often associated with heel pain," says Schneider.

Another cause of pain can be tarsal tunnel syndrome.

“The tibial nerve running through the foot is constricted here,” says Schneider.

This can be caused by swelling caused by varicose veins, broken bones or often due to shoes that are too tight or too high.

Aching heel: Therapy from cooling to shock waves

So much for the causes.

So that the ordeal in the foot area comes to an end as soon as possible, the right diagnosis and the right therapy are essential.

First, the doctor examines the feet extensively - for example using palpation, X-rays, ultrasound and MRI.

If you know the trigger, you can act.

According to Schneider, cool packs and anti-inflammatory gels often help with heel spurs.

If this and stretching exercises do not noticeably ease the discomfort caused by the heel spur within one to two weeks, shock wave therapy is an option, says Schneider.

According to Schneider, medication and heel pads in shoes help in addition to cold applications in the case of Achilles tendonitis.

"An operation is usually not necessary," says the orthopedic surgeon.

In this case too, shock wave therapy could bring noticeable relief.

As well as stretching exercises for the calf muscles.

Aching heel: Strengthen the foot muscles with exercises

If the pain is caused by arched arches, shoe insoles are necessary to support the longitudinal arch of the foot.

Exercises to strengthen the foot muscles are helpful.

Gräber lists a few: grabbing pens with your feet, lifting each toe individually or placing a tennis ball under your feet and rolling the entire sole of your foot over it.

According to orthopedic surgeon Schneider, an operation is an option if the tendon along the sole of the foot, the so-called plantar fascia, is damaged and needs to be tightened.

A tarsal tunnel syndrome is accompanied by severe nocturnal pain, which can be felt in the foot area and also in the lower leg.

"Here the patient is injected with anesthetic locally," explains Schneider.

Sometimes cortisone is also used.

"If that doesn't help, the constricted nerve can be loosened with an operation."
