If you are trying to get pregnant, another reason has been found why you should very much avoid getting infected with corona.

A research team from Belgium found that symptomatic corona can reduce sperm quality and sperm count for months.

The study, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, examined samples from 120 unvaccinated men at an average age of 35. The samples were collected an average of 52 days after COVID-19 symptoms had passed.

The researchers found that during the first month after being infected with corona, 37 percent of participants had a reduced sperm count and 60 percent of them had sperm with limited motility.

At one to two months after the disease, 29 percent had a smaller sperm count, and 37 percent had limited sperm motility.

The quality of the sperm decreases following testing for the corona virus.

After two months, the sperm count was only 6 percent lower than in the sampled men, and reduced motility was found in over a quarter of them.

The team estimates that it will take at least three months for sperm to return to normal, but the low number of people tested and the temporary limitations will require more extensive research to better understand the effect of COVID-19 on fertility.

And yet there is one good news: the researchers found no evidence of SARS-CoV-2 in the sperm, indicating that the virus does not pass through the sperm.

It should be noted that the flu virus can also be harmful to the sperm.

In the case of the flu, a high body temperature (fever) is what causes the damage.

In corona, however, the mechanism is unclear, and may be related to the immune response.

Several studies from the past year have indicated a link between virus infection and infertility in both men and women, but the reasons for this have yet to be determined.

For example, a review published last February in the journal Reproduction, states that infection with Covid-19 can drastically impair male fertility, due to inflammation that causes damage to the testicles.

The review includes a wide range of studies regarding the effects of covid-19 on the recently published reproductive system and it also raises hypotheses about the mechanisms that may explain corona virus infestation.
