A 31-year-old surfer was killed in an alleged shark attack in Morro Bay, California, and a 24-hour ban on entering the water was spread across the bay.
The BBC reports, citing state authorities.
Local police said they responded to a report of a male victim "unresponsive on the beach after being pulled out of the water".
The man - who was not identified - was pronounced dead on the spot.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing but in the meantime bathers have been ordered to stay out of the water for the next 24 hours.
