In many places in Germany there is little or no sign of the post-Christmas winter mood in the coming days.
Instead, it gets wet - and possibly dangerous.
The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of black ice from the Upper Palatinate via Thuringia and Northern Hesse to southern Lower Saxony, especially for Sunday evening and Monday night into the morning.
"You have to be careful when you are out there," said DWD meteorologist Marco Manitta.
According to the forecasts, another severe frost night is expected east of the Elbe, while the night in the southwest is frost-free with a little drizzle.
According to the weather service, Tief "Per" is responsible for the black ice with its core located above the sea area north of Ireland.
It was shoveling mild Atlantic air slowly northeast.
"In this context, the temperature increases significantly, especially in the higher air layers, so that light precipitation mostly falls as rain, which then hits the frozen ground and leads to dangerous black ice," said Manitta.
According to the DWD, the new Atlantic low "Roland" will drive the last remnants of the cold air out of the far northwest by the middle of next week.
There could still be black ice rain on Tuesday night in Eastern Bavaria and on Wednesday night on the border with Poland.
Unusually mild temperatures with highs between 10 and 15 degrees are expected from Wednesday in the west and southwest as well as in the far east.
"Frost, black ice, black ice and snow will be replaced by wind and heavy rain," said Manitta.
There is a threat of continuous rain in the western and southern low mountain ranges and on the Alps.
In addition, the snowfall line is rising to over 2000 meters, so that additional snowmelt can cause rising river levels.
