At the Corona summit, the prime ministers are discussing new measures.

The 2G rule in retail is also being discussed.

The supermarkets have a clear opinion.

Update from December 2nd:

Now it's official!

At the Corona summit, the federal and state governments decided on the "g rule" for retail throughout Germany.

However, shops for daily needs are excluded from this.

Some of the countries still have to rework which stores are meant by this, but one thing is clear: supermarkets will not be affected by the 2G rule.

First report:

Berlin / Munich - The fourth corona wave continues to spill over Germany, the number of infections is rising.

In order to finally master the dangerous situation, the prime ministers of the federal states are currently debating new measures that are not only intended to slow down the infection process, but also to protect the citizens.

In the retail sector, the 2G rule (vaccinated and recovered) should therefore be switched to.

The large retail chains such as Aldi, Lidl or Edeka have already commented on this.

2G in retail: two federal states are giving supermarkets a free hand

First of all, it should be noted that the so-called shops for daily needs - such as pharmacies or even supermarkets - should be excluded from the deliberations of the state politicians.

Rather, the planned regulation should be enforced by the other retail stores.

Clothing stores, hardware stores and toy shops, for example, should then fall into this category.

In two federal states, namely Lower Saxony and Hesse *, supermarkets have been able to rely on the 2G rule for a few weeks, but will still not use this option.

Supermarkets and 2G: Aldi, Lidl and Kaufland show a clear edge

“As a food retailer who ensures basic supplies, we are not affected by the 2G rule *.

We will not implement this either in or outside Hesse, ”emphasized Lidl in October.

The discounter giant Kaufland takes a similar view: "In our branches, the well-known distance and hygiene rules as well as the mask requirement still apply."

Aldi and Edeka are also clearly committed to the existing conditions, an adjustment to the 2G rule is out of the question for both supermarket chains: "Excluding individual customer groups from shopping would fundamentally contradict our self-image as a reliable basic supplier," assured an Aldi spokesman.

“We want to continue making it possible for everyone to shop at Edeka.

Therefore, the 2G regulation is not an option for us, ”explains Edeka.

The decision not to implement the 2G regulation is also popular with representatives of the

German Trade Association

.

Managing director Stefan Genth told the

editorial network Germany

that it is fundamentally important that implementation for the markets remains voluntary, as in Hesse and Lower Saxony.

2G is simply not feasible, especially for businesses with high customer frequency.

2G in the supermarket: Politicians are not convinced either

The associated loss of sales would also make implementation of the 2G rule in supermarkets almost unrealistic.

Since every citizen also has a right to basic supplies, the requirements for daily shopping should not be able to be changed.

“Restricting access for unvaccinated citizens to retail is a disproportionate restriction of freedom and would exclude them from the basic supply,” recently confirmed Erik Schweickert, retail policy spokesman for the FDP in the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg.
