Sea lions move to the golf course - and cause roads to be closed

Animal welfare in a very practical way: The city of Dunedin in New Zealand closed a road in January to protect a sea lion and her cub.

Vehicles are not allowed to use John Wilson Ocean Drive for the coming month to "allow some special residents to use the road safely," the city announced on Facebook.

The animals had therefore settled on a golf course and regularly crossed the road to get to the beach.

However, mother and child were not completely sealed off: pedestrians and cyclists were still allowed to visit the area - but the city called for people to stay at least 20 meters away from the sea lions and keep dogs on a leash.

New Zealand sea lions are rare, and according to the World Conservation Union, they are considered threatened.

Turkey crashes into car - total write-off

A turkey hit a car so hard in Baden-Württemberg in March that the owner had to take her car to the junkyard.

As the police announced, a witness had previously seen the bird crossing the road several times at the exit of Adelmannsfelden in the Ostalb district.

Suddenly the animal flew off and crashed into the car of a 40-year-old woman, it was said.

The vehicle was so severely damaged by the collision in the front area that an economic total loss resulted.

The turkey, however, was reportedly uninjured in the accident.

Giant lizard on the shelf

A monitor lizard wreaked havoc in a supermarket just outside Bangkok in spring.

A video shot by an employee of the store shows how the approximately 1.60-meter-long giant lizard climbs vertically up a shelf - and in doing so removes the goods from the boards.

Once at the top, the animal makes itself comfortable and extends its long tongue.

The shocked noises made by customers and employees can be clearly heard in the video that was posted on YouTube by the Viral Press platform.

The incident occurred in Nakhon Pathom 50 kilometers west of Bangkok, it said.

The lizard apparently got out of a nearby canal and purposefully walked into the shop.

An employee reportedly called the police;

a task force had brought the monitor monitor from the shop and released it in a nearby bush.

According to "Viral Press", the lizard may have been hungry because the natural food supply was very poor after a long period of drought.

Monitor monitors are not uncommon in Thailand, the lizards are considered harmless.

Catfish fails on turtle

Even experienced anglers do not see that every day: At the end of June, a 1.50-meter-tall catfish was pulled ashore at the Göttingen Kiessee, which had choked on a turtle.

The animals were discovered by a paddler, as reported by the Göttinger Tageblatt.

Part of the reptile was still sticking out of the predatory fish's mouth.

"I tried to pull the turtle out of its mouth - no chance," said the woman accordingly.

She described the situation as "unreal and scary".

While the turtle was apparently already dead, the catfish was initially still alive.

"But it could no longer be saved and would not have survived," said Marc Stemmwedel from Sportangelklub Göttingen eV The turtle, whose hind legs were hanging out of its mouth, bit its gills in agony.

That is what anglers of the club would have noticed, who should have killed the fish in the end.

The 35 to 40 kilogram catfish had been sent to a "sensible recycling" and did not end up in the garbage can, assured Stemmwedel.

Catfish are valued as food fish.

Dog urine causes the traffic light pole to overturn

By marking their territory, dogs follow their basic instinct.

In Japan, the animals allegedly brought down a traffic light pole in the summer with their evacuation.

An examination of the broken iron mast by police specialists found a 40 times higher amount of dog urine than in other masts, reported the Japanese TV station NHK from the city of Suzuka in Mie Prefecture.

The experts therefore suspect that the traffic light pole at an intersection was the victim of corrosion from the animals' urgency.

According to the report, there is a path next to the mast, on which many dog owners take their animals for a walk.

The pillar actually has a lifespan of around 50 years, but it fell over after 23 years, it was said.

However, neither humans nor animals were injured by the mast fall.
