(ANSA) - PALERMO, 28 DEC - The Sicilian Region has started the procedures that will lead to the acquisition of the birthplace of the poet Salvatore Quasimodo, in Modica, in the province of Ragusa.
The green light came with a resolution of the Musumeci government, approved at the last meeting of the council, after the estimate of the regional technical department which quantified the value of the property at about 220 thousand euros.
Last March the regional council had allocated one million euros for the purchase and enhancement of the house.
"The Quasimodo house is one of the many places in Modica that attract the attention and curiosity of tourists and schoolchildren. We therefore feel it is our duty to follow up on the commitment we had made - together with the Department of Cultural Heritage - to transform the property in a pole of cultural tourism ", says the president of the Sicilian Region, Nello Musumeci.
Quasimodo spent the first years of his life in the baroque town (he was born in 1901), subsequently maintaining a close link with the places of his childhood. The property is located in the historic center, a short distance from the church of San Giorgio. The premises house the original study and other objects belonging to the Nobel Prize which had been acquired in 1992 by the Region and then destined for the Municipality. The house also includes a 650 square meter garden.
"Quasimodo's house represents a prestigious piece of the network of museum houses wanted by the Musumeci government and also the right recognition to the Modica poet and Nobel Prize for literature in '59", says the regional councilor for cultural heritage, Alberto Samonà.
The "regional network of museum houses" intends to link structures linked to personalities from the world of culture of Sicilian origins or who, during their careers, have developed a close link with the island.
