An adaptation of the book by Philip Roth
As in the novel of which it is an adaptation, the film tells the story of the unfaithful love between a woman neglected by her husband, on whom she is financially dependent, and Philip, a famous writer to whom she confides her desires and her deepest thoughts.
Of which she is not the first lover.
“What struck me when I discovered Philip Roth's book was the writer's keen attention to the voice of each woman,” comments Arnaud Desplechin.
Finding a space of freedom without judgment, the character of the English lover confides in this older man, who thinks only of his coming death.
Together, they manage to create bursts of happiness.
“We are mortal, and it is terrifying.
But our mortality offers us an infinite gift: desire, ”adds the filmmaker.

"I felt physically different"
A theater and cinema actor but also a writer, Denis Podalydès delicately embodies the character of the novelist in love with words and bodies. For this role combining the carnal and the intellectual, the 58-year-old actor had to follow a little diet. "Which allowed me to think of myself as more desirable," he admits. “Watching the movie made me feel physically different.” Male hero of a very female cast, the actor was struck by the “sublime” of his partners, among whom we find Anouk Grimberg, Emmanuelle Devos, Rebecca Marder and Madalina Constantine. Poetic, sparkling, subtly erotic,
Tromperie
reflects on male-female relationships and the complexity of desire. Who, even if he upsets, betrays, surprises and hurts, remains the nicest way to feel alive.
