Myasthenia gravis, or in Hebrew "muscle fatigue", is a rare and severe chronic disease, caused by an incorrect reaction of the immune system against healthy cells and tissues. The disease causes muscle weakness, can affect the muscles of swallowing, breathing and limb muscles and even cause life-threatening respiratory failure. There are currently between 800 and 1,200 patients with the disease in Israel, when no cure has yet been found to help them. Dr. Shachar Sheli, a specialist in neurology, and the chairman of the MGI Association, Eran Moshe, came to be guests at the Walla! To tell about the disease.
"What actually happens is that the body attacks itself. Today we do not really know what causes this disease," said
Dr. Shelley.
. "We know that there is a family connection, but not a generational connection. If the mother is ill, it is not certain that the children will start as well. It is not genetic, but there is a genetic predisposition to develop autoimmune diseases. Some refreshment after rest. This disease is characterized by the disorder being mainly motor. In Israel today there are between 800 and 1,200 reported patients. There are probably more in the field. It is very common among young men in their 20s, but young women can get sick and so can older women. "One specific drug that is terribly expensive is very effective. 12 patients who did not respond to standard treatment showed improvement. The disease can be diagnosed by blood tests, electrical examination or imaging of the chest."
"Our entire association committee is made up of patients with the disease," noted
MGI chairman Eran Moshe
.
"The association was set up to bind the patients. We have no medicine in the basket, it is empty. All the treatments we have are near. It is treatments for other diseases that they decided to try. There is more awareness in the world than in the country. One of the doctors told me it was a neglected disease."
