New Netflix series "Kitz" ": champagne showers under the Maserati

The kids of richer Munich residents as neglected egomaniacs: »Kitz« is not lacking in clichés. But the series is told in a fast-paced manner - and optimally cast.

Confidence is dipped in truffles, guilt is drowned in champagne.

And the facade is treated with beauty treatments and botox until the face resembles a shell.

If you don't feel "Wohoooo", you just have to help out with the Platinum Mastercard.

Or numb yourself with Liquid Ecstasy.

For the kids in Kitzbühel, life is a party.

Sobering up is for the mob.

No, that's not the description of a contribution from RTL's »Exklusiv«, Frauke Ludowig also does not present »The Lives of the Super Rich«.

And it has nothing to do with the Geißens either (but it could, because it's also a bit embarrassing).

This chain of clichés comes from the German Netflix series "Kitz", which can be seen on the streaming portal from Thursday.

Aspen of the Alps

It is about a group of wealthy Munich residents who invade the tranquil little town in the Tyrolean Alps every winter. They pop the corks in their chalets, dig up the slopes with their snowmobiles, and in between they buy new ski equipment with dad's money. As befits the aristocracy, they are hated by the people of Kitzbühel - and equally respected. Because without your money, Kitzbühel wouldn't be the Aspen of the Alps, just some snow-covered nest.

Of course, none of this is suitable for a young adult mystery series that wants to be "Kitz" in the style of the very successful productions "Riverdale" or "Elite".

So, of course, someone has to die.

You find out right at the beginning that this has already happened.

Last New Year's Eve, Lisi's (Sofie Eifertinger) brother made his way out of the village to his rich girlfriend Vanessa (Valerie Huber) despite the slippery streets.

The two kept their relationship a secret.

Because Vanessa was still in a relationship with Dominik (Bless Amada).

And presumably the different bank balances stood in the way of their love.

A short time later he slides through the crash barriers in his car, crying. Vanessa, you can still hear him whining in his cell phone, just kidnapped him. With the death of her brother, Lisi's life stands still. She is not necessarily sensitive to her grief. Because she decides to take revenge on Vanessa and her clique. And one winter later digs into their friendships and relationships.

Lisi's plan sounds a little more perfidious than it is.

Because of course the relationships - as it should be for the rich - are fragile and superficial.

You are initially interested in yourself, the next party or more followers on Instagram.

That changes a bit with Lisi, of course.

The thickness of a wallet doesn’t synchronize the whole soul.

But she, too, is less suitable for the Count of Monte Christo than she thought.

Not complex, unpredictable, or self-deprecating

Already from this description one can guess that »Kitz« is not told in a complex, unpredictable or self-deprecating way. But that's exactly what the series would do pretty well. Instead, the first episodes in particular are bursting with stereotypes and a template-like portrayal of good and bad. You have to be able to do a few champagne showers if you stick with it. And still find it somehow interesting when the kids of wealthy Munich residents have to act as neglected egomaniacs again.

What is fun, however, is how opulent »Kitz« is and how quickly the series is told. Plans are not long hatched, but implemented. Figures don't hesitate, they act. Maybe this is due to showrunner and main author Nikolaus Schulz-Dornburg. After all, he has already co-written the popular series "Biohackers" and "4 Blocks".

It is great that, for once, the series was not cast with Luna Wedler, Jannis Niewöhner or Jannik Schümann.

Instead, they didn't just choose unspent faces, but rather talented ones.

Bless Amada, for example, plays the twenties, who is under pressure from his mother and who is looking for his place in the world despite a well-filled bank account, with a lot of longing and helplessness.

And Valerie Huber also succeeds in making her Vanessa meander between arrogance and languor with cold eyes.

In between you even have compassion.

A little.
