Certain winter spices from a manufacturer were recalled due to degradation products of a carcinogenic substance.

Spice recall: The breakdown product of a carcinogenic substance was found in the winter spices from "Gewürzen Markranstädt".
The products have been recalled.
Munich - Certain winter spices from the manufacturer "Gewürz Markranstädt" (Gemara) have been urgently recalled throughout Germany.
The reason: The breakdown product of a carcinogenic substance was found in the spices.
There is a risk of health damage when consuming the spice mixtures.
Germany-wide spice recall: residues of 2-chloroethanol detected in Gemara product
A corresponding warning was published both on the website of the manufacturer Gemara and on the portal Lebensmittelwarnung.de of the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety.
It is apparently about the ingredient cinnamon, which is contained in the spice mixes.
"In the course of an investigation, small residues of 2-chloroethanol were found in the ingredient cinnamon," said the warning from the portal

. 2-chloroethanol is a breakdown product of the mutagenic and carcinogenic ethylene oxide, the manufacturer explained on its website. "Even if ethylene oxide could not be detected in our products, 2-chloroethanol is classified as equivalent to ethylene oxide due to a lack of scientific knowledge and assessed as potentially harmful," emphasized the press release.
“We therefore recall the products as a precaution and advise against consuming the affected products,” Gemara informed with an additional note: “Customers who have bought the relevant products can return them to their shops.
The purchase price will of course be reimbursed, even without presenting the receipt. "

“Spices Markranstädt” published a long list with detailed information on the products concerned, which, according to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, are sold at Rewe.
