"Harry Potter" reunion with Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe on Sky: And in the end tears roll down

Emotions are only allowed if they tell of love: The reunion of the "Harry Potter" ensemble turns out cheesy. You hear about crushes, but not about rivalries. And one person is missing.

To say that right at the beginning: This special was shot exclusively for fans. Exclusively. If you don't know what to do with "Harry Potter" and are not interested in the films either, you should definitely not watch "Return to Hogwarts", the actors' reunion. Also not hungover on the sofa after a New Year's Eve party. Because even for lovers of the books and film series, it is sometimes quite boring to listen to the actors talk about the shooting. It's not a bit spicy or surprising, but at best touching. But one after anonther.

A few weeks ago the "Harry Potter" film series celebrated its 20th anniversary in cinema: In the late autumn of 2001, the first part, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", was released in cinemas.

To celebrate this (and, of course, to build on the economic success of the films), Warner drummed up the actors for a reunion.

That already worked recently with the "Friends" series.

In any case, the fuss about the meeting of the six New York friends was quite high, as was the disenchantment over the deplorable condition of Matthew Perry.

No room for confession

At the "Harry Potter" reunion, which can be seen on Sky from January 1st, you don't have to worry about the physical or mental state of the actors.

Not because there weren't any abysses.

After all, "Harry Potter" actor Daniel Radcliffe said years ago that fame, pressure and the feeling of being constantly watched by the public drove him into alcohol addiction.

However, the meeting was honed in such a way that there was no room for any confessions.

Or these disappeared in the cut.

Emotions are only allowed here if they tell of friendship, love or affection.

Perhaps the reunion will tip over into kitsch in some places so that even as a fan you have to bundle all your feelings of nostalgia in order not to sigh loudly.

The special tells about the shooting of the eight parts in rapid succession, from the off and aseptically placed in the old scenery, the filmmakers and actors comment on their work in various discussion groups.

You learn all sorts of nice trivialities.

Mentors, crushes, first dances

That Tom Felton, who played Harry's nasty antagonist Draco Malfoy, was actually extremely smart and kind, Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) had always loved him very much.

That she once thought of quitting, but then went back to filming.

That the rather terrific Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) was like a mentor for Radcliffe.

That he was enthusiastic about Helena Bonham Carter, who was fabulously maddened by the psychopathic Bellatrix Lestrange.

And that Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) danced with Dame Maggie Smith for the first time in his life.

And of course you can see the hundreds of meters long lines of children who auditioned for a role in the films.

And her overwhelming excitement about possibly becoming a part of "Harry Potter".

That was also a problem during the subsequent shoot, says Chris Columbus, the director of the first two parts: The selected children were so happy that they often could hardly concentrate on a scene.

You can see them fooling around, showing rabbit ears or clapping their hands until they glow.

JK Rowling is missing

The sometimes most interesting thing about this reunion is the fact that the creator of the "Harry Potter" universe plays no role in it: JK Rowling, who is repeatedly criticized (and also by the actors) for allegedly trans-hostile statements, is at the class reunion not there.

British media rumored that it was because of this that she was unloaded.

But you couldn't do without them entirely.

The writer also had too much influence in the production of the films for that.

Instead of currently questioning Rowling, it was decided to let her have her say in interview scraps from 2019.

A poor fulfillment of duty.

The cutouts look strange and sometimes squeezed into them carelessly.

They don't distract from their absence, they just emphasize Rowling's absence even more.

It's also a shame that the special doesn't contain more making-off scenes.

Because the child and, ultimately, teen actors grew up on the film set and together.

"Harry Potter" is not just her coming-of-age on screen.

Behind the scenes there will not only have been rivalries and friendships, but also rivalries.

And the pressure of having to live up to the ideals of millions of fans will not have been easy for everyone to bear.

Instead of talking about it, the actors confirm to each other that they are family to one another.

You love each other, but "like friends".

Watson and Grint, who probably spent most of the hours in front of the camera with Radcliffe, add that with a laugh.

In the end, tears roll down.

Sometimes you are really touched by it.

Sometimes one is irritated by the stenciled emotions.

And sometimes you get annoyed by their triviality.

Most of the time, however, you remember why you never watched the interviews with the actors or the dull tinkering from the Settlement carpentry on DVDs.
