Part of the facade has been torn away, false ceilings collapsed, the walls collapsed, household items destroyed everywhere.
On Friday, a four-story apartment building in the northern Belgian town of Turnhout partially collapsed after an explosion.
The rescue workers recovered a fourth fatality early Saturday morning.
“I was still sleeping, a loud bang woke me. The whole house shook. I looked out the window to see what happened there. It was clear that something was wrong. I've seen a lot of people on the street. Then I went outside and saw all the destruction. "
A gas explosion presumably led to the accident early Friday morning.
Some debris flew several hundred meters.
“
The explosion was so violent that my bedroom door and the door to the hallway wobbled.
I immediately got up and went downstairs to see what happened.
At first I didn't see anything, I just heard the sirens of the fire brigade and the ambulance.
And a helicopter circled over the house. "
The remains of the building have now been secured and the ruins stabilized.
Mayor Paul Van Miert announced on Saturday that none of the residents are considered missing.
It should be clarified on New Year's Day when the residents will be allowed to enter the house again.
