The tax-free allowance and the minimum wage are increasing, there are changes to Hartz IV and the era of plastic bags is over.

A brief summary of consumer-relevant innovations.

Munich - There is only a short period of time until the turn of the year 2021/2022. As always, the new year brings consumers in this country some innovations, changes in the law and also improvements.

Legal minimum training allowance from January of 585 euros

The minimum remuneration (for trainees) has been laid down in the Vocational Training Act since 2020.

Training companies must therefore pay their trainees appropriate remuneration.

"For apprenticeship contracts that start on January 1, 2022, a statutory minimum training allowance of 585 euros applies to the first year of training," writes the

German Handwerks Zeitung.

In 2021 it was at least 550 euros.

There are corresponding surcharges for the second, third and fourth year of training.

Supermarkets and discounters have to accept used electrical appliances

Consumers can hand in their old or defective electrical appliances - such as hair dryers or kettles - in discounters or supermarkets from January 1, 2022.

They have to accept the e-waste if the shop space is larger than 800 square meters and they sell electronic devices several times a year.

Up to an edge length of 25 cm, the tax is not related to a new purchase.

Online retailers have to take back and recycle old electrical appliances free of charge.

The background to this issue is that so far fewer waste electrical and electronic equipment has been collected in Germany than is required by the EU.

Postage becomes more expensive

Deutsche Post will increase its postage fees by 4.6 percent in 2022.

These were last adjusted three years ago.

From January 1st, a standard letter will cost 85 cents instead of 80 cents, and a postcard will cost 70 cents instead of 60 cents.

Registered mail is 15 cents more expensive.

Chick killing will be banned in Germany from 2022

According to the federal government, around 45 million chicken chicks were killed every year in Germany alone.

The routine killing of the newly hatched male chicks will be prohibited in Germany from January 2022.

With this law, Germany is a global pioneer.

Petrol and diesel are becoming more expensive

Because of the rising CO₂ tax, which serves to make climate protection more attractive, the prices that consumers have to pay at petrol stations are also rising.

Instead of 25 cents per ton of CO₂ emitted, 30 cents are due

The end of the plastic shopping bags

At the checkouts of German supermarkets they will be history from January 2022 - the plastic bags.

Only paper, jute or more stable reusable plastic bags will then be resold.

Only the thin plastic bags in the fruit and vegetable departments can continue to be used.

The termination button is mandatory

From July 2022, the so-called termination button will be mandatory.

Anyone who concludes a contract online must just as easily be able to terminate it online - without much fuss.

The regulation is part of the "Law for fair consumer contracts."
