In order to avoid accidents caused by the improper use of firecrackers and rockets and thus to relieve the hospitals already extremely stressed by Corona, a sales ban on New Year's Eve fireworks also applied at this turn of the year.
The majority of the citizens found that correct: In a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the news agency dpa, 66 percent of those questioned supported the measure that the federal and state governments agreed on because of the corona pandemic.
Nevertheless, firecrackers could be heard and rockets to be seen, not a few of which probably came from illegal sources.
As every year, there were serious accidents during the bang.
In the explosion of a fireworks in
Hennef near Bonn
, one man was killed and another was seriously injured. The two men, 37 and 39 years old, had celebrated New Year's Eve with a group of ten. Shortly after midnight, according to witnesses, they had separated a little from the group. Suddenly there was a very loud bang and the two were seriously injured on the ground.
The 37-year-old died despite attempts at resuscitation at the scene of the accident in the Hennef district of Hüchel; the 39-year-old was taken to a clinic with life-threatening injuries. A police spokesman suspected early Saturday morning that the fireworks
could have been
a
self-made firecrackers
. The criminal police started the investigation. "Bild" had previously reported on the accident.
At a private New Year's Eve party
in east Berlin
, twelve people were injured in the explosion of illegal fireworks.
All injured people had to be taken to clinics for treatment, the fire brigade announced on New Year's morning.
Fortunately, there were no very serious injuries.
After initial investigations, the police assume that
illegal pyrotechnics were

at the celebration in the Friedrichshagen district
