Standing, with the flags of the Presidency of the Republic, of Italy and of Europe behind him, from the Quirinale palace, the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, delivered the end-of-year message, on the eve of the expiry of the seven-year term.

THE PRESIDENT'S SPEECH -

"I believe that each President of the Republic, at the time of his election, feels two basic needs: to strip himself of any previous belonging and to take charge exclusively of the general interest, of the common good as the good of each and every one. And then to safeguard the role , powers and prerogatives of the institution which he receives from his predecessor and which - exercising them fully until the last day of his mandate - must transmit intact to his successor ". The legacy of Sergio Mattarella in the last speech to the Italians is all in this sentence in which he confirms that "in a few days" his task at the Quirinale will be exhausted, "as the Constitution wants". A challenging and exciting task, lasting seven years in which, he underlined: "I have never felt alone" ..A short speech and without too many other messages to politics, with the declared intention "to go out on tiptoe", explain al Colle, also in order not to leave too heavy a baggage for his successor. An intervention of about 15 minutes, standing from the studio to the Palazzina del Quirinale, with many passages dedicated to young people. Words that convey confidence in the future - "I am sure Italy will make it" - and with which it has not hidden the many problems still to be faced. The president has repeatedly thanked the Italians for the seriousness shown in the pandemic, seeming at times moved in taking leave of the citizens who have slowly learned to appreciate their discretion and basic ethics. A discretion that did not prevent him, not even this evening,to reaffirm his faith in science and the harsh condemnation - without ever mentioning them - of the no-vax attitudes he defined as "offensive" in wasting vaccines compared to the country's too many griefs.

THE INTEGRAL SPEECH

It was one of the shortest messages delivered by Mattarella at the end of the year, with a single quote, that of the letter to his students written by Professor Pietro Carmina, a victim of the collapse of Ravanusa.

A sober scenography, with shots that have taken the President of the Republic in full person and at times in the foreground.

Ravanusa, Mattarella quotes professor Pietro Carmina: "Never be indifferent"

In front of the TV for the last year-end message of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella over 13.5 million spectators equal to 66% share.

The Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, thanked the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, for the invitation to national unity, solidarity and patriotism.

"These are words that touch the hearts of all citizens. It is the best wishes for a happy new year for Italy"
