Anyone celebrating the turn of the year in Germany on the street could safely leave their hat in the apartment.

The last day of the old year was unusually mild, but according to measurements by the German Weather Service (DWD), a nationwide temperature record was missed by a margin.

The maximum value was measured on Friday in Freiburg with 16.9 degrees.

The maximum value for December 31 in Germany is 17.0 degrees, which was registered in 1961 in Müllheim, Baden-Württemberg.

According to the DWD, most of the stations evaluated recorded new local maximum values: this was not the case at only 69 of 465 stations.

DWD meteorologist Jacqueline Kernn explained the high temperatures over several days.

Choppy, wet and windy

The new year starts a little cooler.

According to the DWD forecast, the south can still look forward to a bright and dry Sunday on Sunday, otherwise it is very cloudy and rains again and again.

The maximum temperatures are 8 to 14 degrees.

From the evening onwards, there can be lightning and thunder in the west and in the middle, squalls are possible.

The week begins unsteadily, wet and windy.

Towards Wednesday it will be temporarily colder and wintery in the mountains, according to the DWD.

A sustained onset of winter is not in sight.
