In the new year, new back frame regulations apply to electrical appliances, which also affect supermarkets and discounters.

Customers need to know that.

Berlin - The year 2022 brings various changes in motion, from which customers of supermarkets and discounters such as Aldi, Lidl and Co. can also benefit.

Because from January there will be an expanded take-back obligation for electrical devices in Germany.

If you then buy toasters, microwaves or washing machines in the supermarket, you have more options for disposing of your old devices.

Aldi, Rewe, Edeka and Co .: From January - customers benefit from this regulation

Because supermarkets and discounters with a sales area of 800 square meters or more will then have to set up collection points for electrical devices, where customers can exchange their old devices. However, the regulation only applies if the corresponding shops offer electrical and electronic equipment in their range several times in a calendar year or permanently. Even if the new regulation takes effect at the beginning of the year, there is still a transition period until June 30, 2022.

However, retailers only have to accept large appliances such as washing machines, microwaves and televisions, lawn mowers and large lights free of charge if a corresponding new appliance of the same type of appliance is purchased.

On the other hand, you can always get rid of small electrical appliances in stores - even if you don't buy a new device at the same time or have not bought the old one from this dealer.

This applies to devices that are no longer than 25 centimeters in any dimension, such as smartphones, razors, toothbrushes and pocket calculators.

However, there is a limit of five old devices that can be returned.

For the new year: take-back obligations for electrical appliances expanded - online retailing also affected

However, the regulation also has an impact on online trading.

In the future, smaller dealers will also have to offer the free collection and disposal of the old device when buying a new device.

According to the consumer center North Rhine-Westphalia (VZ NRW), the law should also oblige dealers to actively point out these possibilities.

The take-back obligation has long been in effect for specialist retailers with a retail space of over 400 square meters or online retailers with a shipping and storage area of over 400 square meters.

Get rid of old electrical appliances - these options still exist

Alternatively, broken and discarded devices can still be returned to the municipal recycling center.

This is usually free of charge.

In various municipalities there is also an offer to have electrical devices picked up.

According to the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU), this is chargeable.
