Your corona vaccination marked a milestone in the fight against the pandemic.

Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci could now be seen on euro bills.

Munich - The world has been fighting the corona virus for 2 years. The pandemic continues and affects all areas of life, but thanks to several vaccines you are not quite so hopeless in the fight against the deadly virus. Many offer good protection against infection and with booster vaccinations this protection can be increased significantly, especially against mutations such as Omikron.

When thinking about the vaccination, two names come to mind: The scientist couple Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci with their company BioNTech.

In the wake of the corona pandemic, the Mainz vaccine manufacturer was able to develop a vaccine against Covid-19 based on the so-called mRNA technology and to bring it to approval with completed studies.

Now an EU politician has asked for the couple to be shown on the new euro bills.

FDP politician suggests a new motive

20 years after the introduction of euro cash, the European Central Bank has started a process to redesign the banknotes.

The population should have a say in this in detail.

However, it will take years before revised notes are available.

In 2024, the Governing Council will decide on the production of new banknotes and when they can be put into circulation.

In search of motives for these future euro banknotes, the European Central Bank (ECB) now received a suggestion from the EU Parliament: FDP politician Moritz Körner demands that Biontech founders Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci be shown on one of the notes.

So they are apparently to be recognized for their important work.

Important European personalities such as the Biontech founding couple should be printed on the new banknotes, said the member of the EU Parliament of the

.

Your work saved the lives of millions of Europeans.

"Her life is an impressive story of integration, advancement, entrepreneurship, scientific excellence and the potential of an open immigration society," emphasized Körner.

Consent from the advisory group is required

First, however, this proposal has to be accepted by the advisory group, in which each of the 19 euro countries is represented by an expert.

The group of experts includes professors, archaeologists and materials physicists.

Germany is represented by Lisa Borgenheimer, Professor of Information Design.

With the extended procedure, however, the advisory group does not try to give preference to individual member states, since the euro notes are used in a very wide area - including in overseas territories of European countries.

In this context, it is not clear whether pictures of Sahin and Türeci can actually land on the new euro bills.
