(ANSA) - MEXICO CITY, 03 JAN - Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reiterated today that his country is willing to grant political asylum to the Australian activist Julian Assange as a "gesture of brotherhood and solidarity".

During a press conference to which former British Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn, married to Mexican Laura Alvarez, was invited to honor, López Obrador revealed that he had sent a letter to Donald Trump, towards the end of his tenure in the White House, to which he had no answer and with which he asked him to exonerate Assange.

After adding that in that letter asylum was offered for Assange, the Mexican head of state recalled that "the offer is always valid", because "the right to asylum is a point of pride of our foreign policy".
