The cancellation of the Braunschweig “Schoduvel” carnival procession is apparently due to a spurious letter from the authorities.
"The letter is forged, it is not a letter from the city of Braunschweig," announced the administration and announced a criminal complaint.
The new Lord Mayor Thorsten Kornblum (SPD) also distances himself from the style and linguistic gesture of the letter.
Zugmarschall Gerhard Baller from the Braunschweig Carnival Committee canceled the carnival procession and the entire hall carnival such as Weiberfastnacht or the grand ceremonial meeting on Sunday.
Baller announced that the committee would accept the formal decision to cancel the event announced by the mayor for the coming week.
"The trigger for the step was a letter that I had in the post on New Year's Eve," Baller now told the dpa news agency.
But it was apparently fake.

"The rejection remains in spite of the forgery," said the platoon marshal.
The hope that the carnival could have taken place was very low, he told the portal "regionalheute.de".
Actually, the decision was made to wait until mid-January.
Due to the dynamic pandemic, further development cannot be foreseen at the moment, the city said.
However, a recent vote with the country alleged in the letter did not take place.
In normal years, the "Schoduvel" - Low German for "Scheuch the devil!" - often attracts more than 200,000 spectators to the streets and is therefore the largest street carnival in northern Germany.
