The leader of the League: 'Letta vetoes and wastes time'. M5s asks for Mattarella bis (ANSA)

Parties never so far away on the race to Colle while now only the official date for the start is expected: to block the possible agreements on the Quirinale remains the candidacy of Silvio Berlusconi, which must be removed from the table, for the Democratic Party, as a pre-requisite to start talking to each other, just as Matteo Salvini tries to recover the scene and raises a table with all the leaders, to find Mattarella's successor.

And to add chaos to the chaos comes the 5 Star Movement, with the senators who, somewhat surprisingly, express themselves almost unanimously for the Mattarella bis.

While the Speaker of the Chamber, Roberto Fico, is preparing to formally announce the start of the voting, probably on 24 or 25 January, the Northern League leader in the meantime continues to move on a double track: if the Knight will dissolve the reserve and will be officially on the field - and at the moment there would be no opposite signs, indeed, there would be a hyper activism of the former prime minister - the League will support him compact. But in the meantime Salvini continues to cultivate the idea of reaching a broad agreement, which goes beyond the boundaries of the center-right and allows for a quick closure on the new tenant of the Quirinale. Because the country, is the reasoning made in public and in private, has other priorities, between the Covid emergency and expensive bills.

Practically impossible, however, to imagine that a broad convergence could take place on the name of Berlusconi, indigestible in the center-left. The secretary of the Democratic Party, Enrico Letta, makes the message clear to Salvini, which he will also repeat in the direction scheduled for January 13th. Nothing Berlusconi. "Letta vetoes and wastes time", the reaction in the Lega home. But the 13th could also be an opportunity to clarify an opening of the Dem a Draghi al Colle, but only possible with an iron pact on the holding of the legislature. A theme also dear to the 5s, who in turn largely see Berlusconi as smoke and mirrors. The pressing to converge on the name of a woman, they point out, would also have the advantage of excluding, precisely, the hypothesis of Cav in the Palazzo dei Papi. But to avoid 'leaps in the dark'the senators go further and, in a meeting called for an update on the Colle game, they openly take sides for moral suasion towards the current tenant of the Colle. A move that makes clear the divisions of the Movement.

For now, the parties keep their cards covered, also attentive to any signals that could come from Palazzo Chigi. Mario Draghi, who during the holidays heard from all the leaders for their good wishes, works on the many dossiers that are still hot, from the extension of the Super green pass to the bills, and should not go beyond what was already said in the press conference at the end of the year.

The middle of next week will still be crucial: once the intentions of the Dems are understood, Berlusconi, Meloni and Salvini should get together again to fine-tune their strategy on the Quirinale.

In the meantime, the former premier from Arcore would be engaged in a series of phone calls with the loyalists to test the pulse of the situation and would also have had several talks with the center-right governors in view of the meetings of the councils to choose the representatives of the Regions.

If officially the center-right remains ready to converge on the name of the Knight as a candidate for the Hill, this compactness would seem granite only in appearance.

In fact, rumors of Transatlantico refer to doubts and crossed suspicions on the solidity of the agreement in support of the Knight.

The eyes are first of all on the allies: Salvini and Meloni.

The leader of the League would have given several reassurances on the vote to Berlusconi also because - this is the reasoning made in the center-right - with the Cavaliere al Colle, the former Minister of the Interior would complete the bid on the blue party.

A move to increase consensus within the coalition and a way, they explain, not to remain on the corner in Europe.

Giorgia Meloni has also stated several times that, if a candidate, her party is ready to support Berlusconi.

But not everyone in Fi believes it, also because unconfirmed rumors tell of a meeting in which Meloni actually expressed serious doubts about Berlusconi's candidacy.
