A snow storm paralyzed the US capital. Numerous canceled flight connections aggravated the travel chaos after the holidays. For the president that meant: car instead of helicopter.

A violent snow storm hit the US capital Washington, bus traffic was suspended due to heavy snowfall, schools, federal authorities and corona test centers remained closed.

The neighboring states of Maryland and Virginia were also affected.

US President Joe Biden's helicopter also had to stay on the ground.

Instead, the Democrat, who was returning from a weekend in Delaware, was driven by car from Andrews Air Force Base to the White House.

Air Force One had previously landed safely in the snow.

The District of Columbia authorities, meanwhile, warned residents about unnecessary snow drives.

The national weather service warned that "heavy wet snow and gusts of wind" could lead to dangerous traffic conditions and power outages.

Accordingly, between 13 and more than 25 centimeters of snow is expected.

Travel chaos also due to Corona

Numerous flights were canceled at the capital's airports.

According to the website Flightaware.com, more than 230 flights and thus more than half of all planned connections have been canceled at the Ronald Reagan domestic airport.

Nationwide, more than 2,360 flights were canceled in the United States on Monday.

There has been chaos in US air traffic for days.

In addition to the bad weather in many places, this is also due to the rapid spread of the omicron variant of the corona virus.

Many airlines are currently struggling with personnel problems because employees are in quarantine due to a corona infection or contact with infected people.
