The Dutch consulting firm
To70
, which specializes in aviation safety, recently published 2021 data regarding the number of fatalities in aircraft accidents of commercial flights around the world. The data show a decrease compared to the previous year.
The Business Traveler website reports that according to the data, in 2021 a total of 38 accidents occurred, four of which were considered fatal, resulting in the deaths of 81 people.
This is less than a third of the number of fatalities recorded in 2020, in which 40 accidents occurred, of which five were fatal. These and resulted in the deaths of 299 people. The data also show that the number of fatalities in 2021 is the lowest since 2017. According to the numbers, one fatal accident occurred per 5.3 million flights.
The data also includes all accidents involving aircraft that were reported in the report as "large passenger aircraft used by most passengers."
This definition covers the vast majority of commercial aviation activity in the world.
However, it should be noted that the report does not include air accidents involving military flights, training flights, private flights, transport flights and helicopters.

Inactivity affects flight safety
The airlines involved in those four fatal accidents that occurred in 2021 were
Sriwijaya Air
(Indonesia),
South Sudan Supreme Airlines
(South Sudan),
Aeroservice
(Russia) and
Malu Aviation
(People's Republic of Congo).
The report further stated that problems related to the corona plague did not lead to air accidents.
However, even more interesting is the statement that "there is evidence emerging from aviation incident data, which indicates that the (professional) unpreparedness / lack of familiarity following periods of inactivity affects flight safety."
In this context, the report states that "problems related to refresher training after long periods of absence, work during a period of low stress (where there are insufficient stimuli or motivation to perform optimally) and mental health problems are all factors that the aviation industry must strive for and address".
