Only in Israel: Why are the proud singers moving away from fashion? | Israel today

When you think of gays and pop music, a colorful picture with bold clothes comes to mind • So why when it comes to proud Israeli stars, do we get a gray picture?

Shai Gavso took huge advantage of the momentum of winning "Singer in a Mask", and released a new song this week after disappearing from the musical landscape for a few years.

The musical direction that Gavso chooses to lead in his work is "pop", but does his attire match the style?

When you think of gays and pop music, a picture of crazy color, bold clothes and innovative and exaggerated fashion comes to mind.

Abroad we have many examples of proud pop stars who use fashion to produce a political, social and especially creative statement. The clothes help the pop stars mark themselves as such, and bring the fun and rhythm of the music into the clothes and performance on stage.

We know lots of examples of this, from Elton John, through Freddie Mercury lead singer Quinn with his groundbreaking looks, and even today one of the world's leading singers, Lil Nass ex, who uses fashion to stretch gender boundaries and play with colorful clothing items that enhance his music And the general message he brings to the world as a proud creator.

For some reason, in Israel this combination does not exist.

Proud Israeli pop singers choose to stay as far away from excessive and colorful fashion as possible.

There are almost no gender games to be seen, except for Ren Danker (who defines himself as bisexual) who first decided to wear a dress in his clip and called it "my new dress", instead of "my first dress".

Have you ever seen him with a dress in a clip or a show?

less.

His first dress.

Danker, who has made a comeback in the past year, is trying to produce a proud discourse in the media.

He reveals his more personal life and tries to give expression to the fashion and meaning of the clothing items we wear, and yet that is not enough.

In The X Factor, for example, there is no mention of this, Ren is a talented singer by all accounts, but there is no fashion statement here and no use of fashion for the benefit of promoting pop and the proud agenda.

Ivri Lider, on the other hand, is very much identified with the fashion world, and has even launched collections in the past in collaboration with the Israeli fashion brand "Castro".

The collections were successful and Ivri received rave reviews for his personal taste, but was there pop?

No.

courage?

No and no, and a pity.

Precisely an established creator like Ivri Lider can afford to stretch the boundaries.

In his TYP project he used the character of the talented Uriel Yekutiel to produce a diverse gender discourse (Yekutiel appeared in clips with makeup, heels and clothing considered “feminine” in Western culture), but did not jump into the water himself.

Unlike both, Harel Skaat is not in the right direction at all.

It preserves the image of the good, clean and elegant child.

We do not see colorful or groundbreaking looks in his cut, and apparently he has no desire to wave a flag of fashionable originality or bring a proud statement into his visual work.

The singers who connect to fashion

It seems, then, that Shai Gavso is keeping his friends' line.

Who does use fashion in Israeli pop culture?

Precisely the singers who are not identified with the proud numbness.

Do not be afraid to dare.

Static and Ben El are leaders in fashion boldness.

Over the years, they wore exaggerated looks that placed them at the top of the pop stars' list in Israel, they dressed according to their status and created a fashionable and poppy discourse.

Along with them, even Stefan Lager is not afraid to wear sequins, bright colors and innovative combinations.

Aviv Geffen, from an early age, was not afraid to dye his hair, put on make-up and apply nail polish on his nails.

Zvika Pick also used fashion and makeup to enhance the messages in his songs and character as a pop singer.

Even in the final season of "The Next Star," the talented Tamir Greenberg won, who said live that he takes clothes from his mother's closet and creates surprising clothing combinations along with necklaces and scarves.

And of course, the biggest pop star of our time - Margie, who is not afraid to wear a pearl necklace and dye his hair purple.

He was one of the first not to be afraid to put on make-up.

So how is it that in Israel, the proud pop stars do not dare?

Apparently the answer is in the body of the question.

Maybe because we are in Israel, and the society here can not accept a singer who is both proud and extreme.

Like you're told you will be either way.

Recently, we are witnessing new singers being released when they are already out of the closet, and maybe that's why they're more relaxed.

In The X Factor we have Michael Ben David who is not afraid to wear shimmering suits, there is a past contestant from the next star, Shahaf Blash, who released a very bold clip with his face abroad this year, and another proud singer named Tom Schneid, who also asks questions about masculinity and femininity.

The future looks rosier, more exaggerated and full of glitter, I wish Israel would know how to accept and contain the whole queer arc, and that our pop singers would use fashion to produce a statement and not just present a world of black and white.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
