The state of emergency has been proclaimed - the Russian agencies Interfax, Tass and Ria Novosti report - due to the spread of protests and clashes that have taken place following the increase in fuel.
The announcement was made on TV, with the reading of a press release, the agencies write.
Previously, the clashes had concentrated in the country's financial capital, Almaty, in the province of Mangystau and in the capital Nur-Sultan.
