In Johannesburg, a 36-year-old man tried to break the windows of the Constitutional Court with a hammer and get inside.

Although the police fired a warning shot, he did not abandon his plan at first.

Eventually he was overwhelmed.

His motive is still unclear.

He is now to be brought to justice for property damage.

South Africa is in the international press because of another incident: last day the parliament in Cape Town was on fire.

Because of the fire in the parliament in Cape Town, a 49-year-old was brought before an examining magistrate.

The public prosecutor's office accuses him of illegally gaining entry and starting a fire.

Explosives are also said to have been found on him.

According to his lawyer, the man denies all allegations.

The three-part building complex was badly damaged.

However, the cause of the fire is still unclear.

The fire came against the background of political tension between supporters of ex-President Jacob Zuma and his successor Cyril Ramaphosa.

During his term in office from 2009 to 2018, Zuma had to answer to a commission of inquiry for allegations of corruption.

He failed to obey several subpoenas and was sentenced to several months in prison.

Rioting after protests against his imprisonment resulted in around 350 deaths last year.
