Mysterious theft in Marseille of two Medici vases from Château Borély

The bronze works weighing a hundred kilograms, which were sealed on a terrace, are difficult to sell. The municipality filed a complaint.

Is it the consequence of the ineptitude of the management of the museums of Marseille pointed out in particular by the national financial prosecutor's office and the regional chamber of accounts or a simple villainous act?

On the night of December 20 to 21, 2021, the two Medici vases, which sat majestically on the north terrace of Château Borély in Marseille, were stolen, apparently by very prepared criminals since the two works of art were

"securely sealed"

according to the city's communication service contacted by

Le Figaro.

The municipality of Marseille, which visibly embarrassed by this mysterious theft does not wish to give many explanations for the time being, filed a complaint and alerted the regional conservation department.

The work of investigators may be very difficult since they will not only have to determine who committed the crime, but also and above all, how the thieves operated.

Because the modus operandi had to be carefully organized since the two vases were sealed and each weighed a hundred kilos.

Did they manage to bring a van into Borély Park or did they use a simple hand truck to transport their heavy loot?

All these questions have not yet been answered.

Thugs in need of exploits or scrap dealers?

On the other hand, what is certain is that the security system of Château Borély, a monument very dear to the hearts of the Marseillais, is at least reduced to the minimum. No night patrol of supervisors, no or few detection systems ... This monumental country house erected in memory of the Borély, a large family of Marseille merchants whose first ancestor dates back to the century of Louis XIV, may look like an invitation to the plunder of all kinds.

Villainous theft, robbery of thugs in need of exploits, network of concealment of art objects, all avenues remain open.

One clue, however, could tip the balance in favor of the second hypothesis: according to specialists the resale of the two Medici vases would be almost impossible and would not represent a great market value.

Only scrap dealers, by melting bronze, could then derive a small benefit from it.

A real scenario worthy of the famous film by Claude Sautet.
