Coffee prices are currently exploding on the world market, increases of 100 percent have been recorded.

Nevertheless, consumers do not have to do without the hot beverage.

Munich - Coffee has been trendy for decades.

Whether espresso, white coffee or white chocolate mocha: Hardly any other drink is as versatile and popular as black gold.

Not only are the various creations increasing every year, the prices are also exploding.

In November 2021, coffee prices on the international market reached a 10-year high, and the pound was quoted at 2.50 US dollars in early December.

The price for Brazilian natural products shot up the most; compared to the previous year it more than doubled and rose by 105.7%.

Lovers of the noble hot drink do not have to do without the morning caffeine kick, because a tried and tested trick can go easy on the wallet.

Coffee prices soaring: 2021 will replace low-price years

According to statistics, the German consumer drinks almost 170 liters of coffee per person per year.

Coffee is thus one of the most popular drinks in Germany, but at the same time it is one of the most expensive.

Two types of beans or coffee groups are grown worldwide, Robusta and Coffea Arabica.

The most important growing areas include the South American countries Brazil and Colombia, while Indonesia and Vietnam are also gaining in importance.

Due to the expansion of production, the coffee harvest has increased steadily in recent years, which has pushed the price down.

The market shock then followed in the coffee year 2021/22: prices exploded after four previous years of low prices.

Coffee as expensive as it was 10 years ago: Growing countries suffer from frost and drought

According to statista

, the reason for the soaring prices is

far-reaching crop failures in countries such as Brazil and Colombia, caused by frost and excessively dry weather.

Political unrest, high transport costs and the effects of the corona pandemic do the rest.

In addition, there are currently global and cross-sector supply bottlenecks that are severely scarce for brown beans.

The supply decreased, the global demand increased and the price inevitably went up.

According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), a pound of coffee was quoted just under 1.95 US dollars in November 2021.

For comparison: in 2017 it was $ 1.07.

Only in 2011 was the trade rice even higher: 3.50 US dollars a pound made the beans a real luxury good.

Retail increases in prices: Arabica coffee beans are more expensive

For consumers, this means a renewed burden on their wallets, which were already narrowed after Christmas.

According to

Focus online

, it is quite possible that the supermarkets will also raise the prices for coffee.

A Tchibo insider assured the news portal that there would be no further price round before Easter.

The retail prices at which retailers currently purchase coffee beans have been fixed for a long time.

Nevertheless, the price for Arabica coffee beans was raised at the end of 2021, which would also have had an impact on the supermarkets.

Consumer tips against increased prices

The year starts with gloomy prospects for coffee lovers, but the consumer is not left completely defenseless. As with all the other products and services, it is advisable to compare prices. Online comparison portals enable consumers to get the lowest price for electricity, gas and petrol. For groceries, the classic advertising brochures from Aldi, Lidl, Norma and Co. are recommended. An intensive leafing through before weekly shopping can save one or two euros, especially in times of inflation, advises

Focus

.

Writing a shopping list is also an old trick.

This not only has the advantage of not forgetting anything, but can also serve as motivation.

Consumers should only put what is on the slip in the shopping cart.

In this way, products that are not required can be bypassed and unnecessary expenses can be avoided.

The current rising prices are also due to inflation.

This scored

the record value of 5.0 percent in the euro area.

Rewe boss Lionel Souque also has bad fears: he is worried about delivery bottlenecks and price explosions in 2022.
