Six people were injured by a charcoal grill that was not extinguished on a high-rise balcony in Frankfurt am Main.
The Frankfurt fire brigade announced.
Three adults and three minors had a barbecue on Thursday evening on the twelfth floor of a house in the Sossenheim district, it said.
At night they complained of malaise and called the ambulance.
When the paramedics arrived and examined those affected, the carbon monoxide alarms they were carrying sounded the alarm.
They immediately took the victims outside and had them transported to the surrounding clinics.
The rescue workers ventilated the apartment.
The police are investigating
The Frankfurt fire brigade then examined the surrounding apartments for increased carbon monoxide levels.
She found: The cause of the high carbon monoxide concentration was the charcoal grill - it had not been extinguished.
Now the police are investigating.
Carbon monoxide is a gas that is produced during combustion processes and can accumulate in dangerous concentrations in closed rooms.
The gas is invisible and odorless, so it often goes unnoticed.
In the event of poisoning by carbon monoxide, there is a massive lack of oxygen in the body.
The consequences include - depending on the concentration - headaches, palpitations, nausea, apathy, shortness of breath and, in the worst case, death.
