Are you in the application process, but are unsure of what needs to be included in your résumé?

To apply for a

new

position

,

you

need a

résumé

.

One might think that it is sufficient to formulate a single version for a life lived up to now.

But this is not the case.

What goes into the résumé - and what doesn’t - depends on various factors.

You don't write that on your résumé

Regardless of which position you are applying for, or how old you are or how much experience you have, one thing is definitely not on your résumé:

primary school education

. No potential new employer is interested in where you attended first grade. This does not mean that you can delete your school career entirely from the curriculum vitae, as the curriculum vitae is also often called. However, limit yourself to the secondary schools that you have attended throughout your life or to the highest educational qualification achieved. This can be the Abitur, or the Haupt-, Werkreal- or Realschule qualification, or subject-specific school qualifications.

What is on the résumé?

Age matters!

Younger people inevitably have less work experience than employees who have been employed for a longer period of time.

That is why it can be okay at a young age to mention

internships

and

stays abroad

on your résumé.

If, on the other hand, you have already gained a lot of professional experience, these stages in your life should only be mentioned if they are relevant to the advertised position.

In general, the most recent experiences are always much more important than those that were a long time ago.

You should also leave this out of your résumé if necessary

Depending

on which position you are applying for

, your

résumé should

be

designed differently.

For example, if you are applying for a part-time job in catering, experience in this area can be included on your résumé.

However, if you are applying for a full-time job in a completely different profession, it hardly matters where you waited alongside your studies.

In addition, you should only write professional training in your résumé if it is relevant for the position and is relatively current, i.e. not several years or even decades ago.
