The moment to act had come when the scale's indicator neared the 300 pound mark.
The next morning he told his wife: "Today is the day." In an interview with the tabloid "New York Post", former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reports that he has lost 90 pounds since then.
"I started exercising, not every day, but almost every day, and eating properly," said Pompeo. "The weight went down on its own." He also set up his own fitness studio in the basement, with dumbbells and a cross trainer. "I've tried exercising for half an hour or so five or six times a week," Pompeo said. “There was no trainer, there was no nutritionist. It was just me. "
Since Pompeo was first elected MP for Kansas in 2010, he has put on weight.
He also said he had used a foot condition as an excuse for not being able to lose weight in the past.
"I've gained nearly a hundred pounds in ten to eleven years - years that coincided with my foot injury," he said.
"So I told myself that was what made me gain weight."
Pompeo was US Secretary of State in the Trump administration from 2018 to 2021.
He had previously served three terms as a member of Congress.
After retiring as Secretary of State, he became a commentator on Fox News.
