From mid-2022, drivers will no longer be alone at the wheel, because ISA will be mandatory on board.

A new regulation should make Germany's roads safer.

Munich - His name is ISA, he is an assistant and will be a constant companion in the life of a driver from the middle of the year.

From July 6, 2022, new vehicles will have to be equipped with the Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA for short), according to a regulation dated November 12, 2021.

The EU regulation 2019/2144 was launched two years ago, and now it is to come into effect.

For drivers, this means: only accelerate with the permission of ISA.

ISA is slowing down: cruise control will be mandatory from 2022

ISA is a technology that can influence the driving style of the vehicle driver. A speed warning system is designed to convince people to adhere to speed limits in traffic. This makes lawning more difficult if the assistant is switched on. A black box in the cockpit should also record data that, like an airplane, should provide information about the course of an accident. According to the website of the European Commission, ISA is "an advanced security feature". Its introduction is intended to reduce “the number of collisions on Europe's roads”. The Europeans should also be protected from poor air quality and climate change and new mobility solutions should be offered that defend the competitiveness of the European automotive industry. This emerges from a report by the European Road Safety Charter.

Intelligent speed assist is becoming a must

The regulation is to apply from the middle of the year to all vehicle types (trucks, cars, buses) that are new to the market.

From July 7, 2024, all new vehicles must have the assistant installed.

Specifically, this means: If you buy a new vehicle today, the driver assistant is not included because it was registered before July 6, 2022 and the regulation does not yet apply.

In 2024 this will change and the vehicle must contain the system.

How ISA works: Combination of known driver assistance systems

Driver assistance systems are no stranger to modern drivers: traffic sign recognition, cruise control and speed limits have been built into and valued in many car models for years.

ISA is now to combine these individual systems and, together with the driver, make the roads safer.

It is important that the driver's options for action are not restricted.

The control always lies with the driver of the vehicle, according to the European Road Safety Charter.

The ISA is to recognize the speed limit by means of a video camera and GPS, whereby the providers of the system must work with certified maps.

If the speed limit is exceeded: ISA issues warnings

If the speed limit is exceeded, the ISA issues various warnings.

Acoustic feedback can be given by lighting up appropriate notices and sounding tones.

If the driver does not react, the system issues a delayed acoustic / vibrating warning.

As a third option, the assistant should gently push the driver's foot back to remind him to slow down.

"The driver can ignore this feedback and override the system by pressing the accelerator a little harder," says the EU.

Braking is still entirely in the driver's power.

This is only activated if there is an automatic emergency brake or adaptive cruise control (ACC) in the vehicle.

ISA costs: Do drivers have to pay the assistant?

According to

Spiegel

, vehicle owners do not have to bear any additional ISA costs for at least seven years.

After that, the manufacturer can decide for himself whether he would like to offer additional technical functions for a surcharge.

ADAC raises concerns: Systems not "adequately tested"

The EU emphasizes the advantages of the intelligent speed assistant, because with the help of the ISA there should be up to 25,000 fewer road fatalities and 140,000 fewer serious injuries every year. However, there is also criticism of the system. Drivers can easily overrule ISA by simply pressing the accelerator pedal harder and ignoring warnings. The stipulation that the system can be deactivated for the duration of a car journey can also be dangerous. The ADAC currently considers ISA and other similar systems "not sufficiently tested and mature," according to the automobile club on its website.

It is not just the introduction of ISA that will be new in 2022, as a lot will change in road traffic.

Among other things, the car manufacturer Hyundai is introducing the new Staria model, which aims to stand out from the competition with its spacey look and fossil-fuel drive.
