Stiftung Warentest has examined coffee beans for espresso and caffè crema from various brands and price ranges.

It turns out that expensive does not necessarily mean the best quality.

Are you an advocate of freshly ground coffee beans * for your hot morning drink?

Stiftung Warentest took a close look at

coffee beans

in its 01/2022 issue

: 21 products for both

caffè crema (15 products)

and

espresso (six products)

.

Various brands were examined in the test: from inexpensive own brands from discounters to well-known brands such as Eduscho, Melitta, Tchibo and Lavazza as well as organic products.

Stiftung Warentest states, among other things: The price says nothing about the quality.

The price range of the tested beans is between eight and 24 euros per kilogram.

Good news: some inexpensive coffee beans also performed well in comparison.

Coffee beans: what is the difference between espresso and caffè crema?

The difference lies in the roasting:

espresso beans

are roasted for a long time and dark, which means that the brewed espresso tastes strong. Typically arabica beans mixed with robusta are used. The latter provide a stronger taste and contain more caffeine. For preparation, the beans are finely ground and brewed with a little water, for example in fully automatic coffee machines or portafilter machines.

Crema beans

are roasted lighter and therefore slightly milder than espresso.

Arabica beans are mostly used.

These coffee beans are particularly popular with users of fully automatic coffee machines, which can be used, for example, to prepare the "Caffè Crema" of the same name, which is a large cup of strong coffee with a fine foam, the so-called crema.

The crema is created by high pressure when brewing.

You can also prepare espresso from crema beans.

Different coffee beans in the Stiftung Warentest: Italians are taste winners

At Stiftung Warentest, the coffee was sensibly assessed by trained testers, among other things: in the categories of

appearance, smell, taste, mouthfeel and aftertaste

. In addition, the coffee beans were examined for harmful substances: Acrylamide and furan in particular are often found in coffee, as they are created during roasting. The good news: All of the products examined comply with the acrylamide guide value. The user-friendliness of the packaging and the declaration also influenced the test results.

Overall, Stiftung Warentest has little to complain about in terms of the quality of the coffee beans tested.

For the espresso beans examined, the worst overall rating was “good” (2.3), and for caffè crema it was “satisfactory” (2.3).

However, there were significant differences in taste and price.

Two Italian brands are particularly recommended to espresso lovers:

Lavazza

and

Segafredo

were able to convince across the board in the taste test.

Eduscho

was also rated

“very good” in taste.

Pleasing for the small budget: three discounter brand coffee beans are at the top of the caffè crema products: from

Netto, Aldi Nord and Lidl

(all around 8 euros per kilogram).

Store coffee properly

Do not buy coffee in advance, especially not ground coffee.

The aroma suffers from contact with air.

Also, do not store coffee beans in the refrigerator; there they can become damp and take on strange aromas.
